It was a normal day for Stevie Rad, lunchtime at Henrietta High School, home of the Fighting Hens. Seriously, she hated that. Couldn’t they come up with a better name than that?
She was feeling really sick though, coughin’ and splutterin’ all day.
“Come on Stevie Rae,” Her friend, Jacky, asked with a grin, “We gotta get to the cafeteria before your annoyin’ brother takes our spot.”
That’s when they noticed him.
A tall guy with a frickin’ awesome crescent tattooed on his forehead.
“Stevie Rae Johnson!” He called to her, as they all froze, “Night has chosen thee; thy death shalt be thy birth. Night calls to thee; hearken to her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the House of Night!” He pointed one long finger at her and her vision exploded.
When Stevie Rae came to she saw my friends leaning over me, shock blazoned across their colourless faces.
“What’s wrong, y’all?” She managed to croak out.
“Ya got Marked,” Jacky whispered, touching her forehead, which stung like hell, “You’d better go home.” she nodded and got up. Her blond curls were probably a bit too short to cover her Mark but she did it as well as she could and walked out of the school, feeling like puking.
The sun hurt her eyes and as Stevie Rae walked she could see people staring at her in shock, cringing back when she passed them. News had flown. she felt like crying but she clamped on the pricking until she got to my car.
Then Stevie Rae cried as she drove, squinting through sunglasses she found on her dashboard.
Her family lived in this big ol’ weatherboard house on their ranch. Dust flew up underneath her wheels as she drove down the driveway. her parents would know by now that someone was comin’ home early.
When she came inside my momma got up from her chair and said anxiously, “What’s wrong honey? Why are ya home early?” Then Stevie Rae let her hair fall back from her Mark and she gasped when she saw the purple outline of a crescent on her forehead.
“Oh sweet mother of god,” she whispered and enfolded her daughter in her arms, “Whatever gets you outta Henrietta is probably a good thing, honey. I’ll call your daddy and he’ll drive you to Tulsa, alright?”
“Thanks momma,” She whispered back.

After saying goodbye to her family her daddy drove Stevie Rae to Tulsa House of Night where she met the Twins and Damien who helped her settle in.
Then Zoey Redbird came and things started to get interesting…
